The Guilbeau Poll: Georgia tops SEC

September 11, 2008

1. GEORGIA (2-0, 0-0) - So far, the Bulldogs are looking about as good as advertised, but need to improve the defense. 2.FLORIDA (2-0, 0-0) - At least when Spurrier ran up the score, he was in the 60s or 70s. Urban Meyer’s scoring late, and he’s in the 20s? Tennessee could surprise the Gators next week. 3.AUBURN (2-0, 0-0) - If Auburn had any class, it would have offered its stadium to LSU this week as a contingency plan to make up for that obvious cheap shot on Glenn Dorsey last season. 4.LSU (1-0, 0-0) - Never will LSU fans look more forward to a game against North Texas, or someone like it, than this Saturday after three weeks of hurricane awareness. Tiger Stadium will be going wild for a 40-point underdog. 5.ALABAMA (2-0, 0-0) - Bama fans need to realize that Clemson probably was not that good, and their team still has a long way to go before they can start saying they’re back. 6.VANDERBILT (2-0, 1-0) - The Commodores have never been this high here. 7.TENNESSEE (0-1, 0-0) - Don’t be too hard on the Vols after their overtime loss at UCLA. At least, this school knows how to schedule. 8.KENTUCKY (2-0, 0-0) - The Cats again have an easy early schedule. 9.SOUTH CAROLINA (1-1, 0-1) - Mr. Thursday night (a.k.a. Steve Spurrier) has lost two in a row to Vanderbilt. Funny, he used to make fun of Phillip Fulmer. He also used to run up the score. Now, barely anyone on his team can run. 10.OLE MISS (1-1, 0-0) - The Rebels played well and could have beaten a good Wake Forest team on the road. 11.ARKANSAS (2-0, 0-0) - Bobby Petrino came within a 45-yard field goal of losing to Louisiana-Monroe and had to rally to beat Western Illinois the week before. Now, it’s Texas, Alabama and Florida, Houston, they have a problem. 12.MISSISSIPPI STATE (1-1, 0-0) - The Bulldogs are but 1-1 against off Broadway Louisiana schools. Game of the Week: No. 2 Georgia at South Carolina, 2:30 p.m., CBS - It’s year four of coach Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, and suddenly people are starting to wonder about his offenses. Where are they? A loss to Georgia would also give Spurrier seven losses in his last eight games. Georgia, meanwhile, begins a stretch of four challenging games. After South Carolina, it’s a trip to No. 15 Arizona State, a home game against No. 11 Alabama and a home game against Tennessee. UAB (2-0) at Tennessee, 11:30 a.m., Raycom Sports SEC Game of the Week. Arkansas at No. 8 Texas (2-0), 2:30 p.m., ABC. No. 9 Auburn at Mississippi State, 6 p.m., ESPN2. OTHER GAMES Western Kentucky (1-1) at No. 11 Alabama, 6 p.m. Samford (2-0) at Ole Miss (1-1), 6 p.m. Middle Tennessee (1-1) at Kentucky (2-0), 6 p.m. North Texas (0-2) at No. 7 LSU (1-0), 7 p.m. LAST WEEK’S GAMES Alabama 20, Tulane 6 Arkansas 28, Louisiana-Monroe 27 Auburn 27, Southern Mississippi 13 Florida 26, Miami 3 Georgia 56, Central Michigan 17 Kentucky 38, Norfolk State 3 Wake Forest 30, Ole Miss 28 Mississippi State 34, Southeastern Louisiana 10 Vanderbilt 24, South Carolina 17 OFFENSE - Georgia tailback Knowshon Moreno gained 168 yards on 18 carries with three touchdowns and completely hurdled Central Michigan defensive back Vince Agnew on a 29-yard gain. DEFENSE - Vanderbilt linebacker Patrick Benoist made 15 tackles, including a sack and a two-yard loss and deflected a pass. FOOD AND SHELTER: First, the Tulane Green Wave got a standing ovation from the crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Ala., before last Saturday’s game, then got treated to a free meal after the game. Tulane had to flee New Orleans early last week because of Hurricane Gustav’s approach and stayed and practiced in Birmingham. They got some southern hospitality at Alabama after a 20-6 loss and a bit of a pep talk from Alabama coach Nick Saban. “We made one of our rooms in the stadium available to them and fed them after the game,” Saban said. “They couldn’t get back to their dorms until early the next morning. First of all they went through a tremendous sacrifice to even come here and play the game. They are away from their fellow students, friends, family; out of school for a week worrying about a weather situation that could impact them dramatically one way or the other. To me they must have prepared well because they played really well in game. “They played with a lot of intensity and toughness in the game and I respect that in all competitors. I told them that I appreciated them for making a sacrifice to play the game, and to make the sacrifice and play as well as they did was something that did not go unnoticed by us and that we held what they did in high esteem. I wished them well on the rest of their season and told their coaches they did a fantastic job of keeping their team together through the adversity that they had to face in preparation for the game.” RUNNING IT UP: Florida, leading Miami 23-3 in the final moments Saturday, threw a deep pass and kicked a 29-yard field goal with 25 seconds to go for the final score. “I’ll just say this one statement,” Miami coach Randy Shannon said after the game. “Sometimes when you do things, and people see what type of person you really are, you turn a lot of people off.” Florida coach Urban Meyer avoided questions about running up the score. “I learned a long time ago just coach your team and take care of yourself,” Meyer said. “Special teams, offense and defense occupies all our time. So, I’m good. We’ve got to move on.” Interestingly, Meyer just last July at SEC Media Days did not move on. He continued to criticize Georgia coach Mark Richt for having his team run on the field after a touchdown against the Gators last season and draw a celebration penalty on purpose. SPURRIER POWER OUTAGE? Has South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who revolutionized the SEC with the fun ‘n’ gun, spread passing offense in the 1990s, seen the game PASS him by? “The way we play offense, you’d say that,” Spurrier said after losing 24-17 to Vanderbilt. “Two years ago, our offense was pretty good. But it ain’t been pretty good lately. That’s for sure. That’s part of the game. When I had a bunch of guys running around scoring a bunch of points, I was a real good coach. And right now, I don’t have a bunch of guys running around scoring a whole bunch of points.” SHORTS: The three points Florida allowed Miami were the lowest by the Gators against a BCS school since a 20-3 win over Kentucky in 2004. … Florida’s defense is No. 8 in the nation in points allowed at 6.5 a game. … Ole Miss’ loss to No. 20 Wake Forest was its 15th in a row to a ranked team. … When UCLA’s Akeem Ayers returned a blocked punt 17 yards for a touchdown against Tennessee, it marked the first time since Phillip Fulmer was named UT’s coach in 1992 that an opponent scored a touchdown off a UT punt. Florida’s offense with Heisman winning quarterback Tim Tebow is ranked 63rd in the nation. “I’m not a very good coach right now,” …. South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier.
